There will be no underclass to escape if the development of AGI is achieved. We need to work right now to stop it. Contacting lawmakers to inform them of this is the most important thing we can do right now.
this kinda writing makes me really angry. thinking that “giving up” is "realpolitik". realpolitik is about being honest with what works and what tools you have, then working towards your goals with that in mind. it’s not about what’s inevitable, or where the trends are heading.
The permanent underclass is not a thing you discover. It is a thing someone builds.
Aristotle graded souls: rational, sensitive, vegetative. That grading created masters, tools, and resources. The three-fifths clause graded persons: full and partial. That grading created citizens and property. IQ graded intelligence on a scalar. That grading created valuable and expendable. Now AI control grades power: who commands the autonomous armies and who does not. That grading is creating the next class boundary right now.
Every time it is the same operation. Build a grading technology. Grade the population. Extract from everyone below the threshold. Present the threshold as natural. The threshold was never natural. The threshold was manufactured by the grading.
The piece says: accumulate capital or build AI income streams before the window closes, or you are permanently below the line. But the line is not a fixed altitude you can climb above. The line is the output of the current grading technology. New technology, new grading, new line. You cannot outrun a line that is being redrawn underneath you. The people who escaped the last underclass did not escape the structure. They escaped one iteration. The next iteration drew a new line and sorted them again.
The question is not how do you escape the underclass. The question is who is building the grading technology and what does it grade for. Answer that and you are looking at the machine that produces the underclass, not at the underclass it produces.

The race for AGI is closing the escape hatch from the Permanent Underclass. If AGI is achieved, the powerful will not need a working class.
We can stop this trajectory by contacting lawmakers now and demanding robust AI legislation.
