Great write up. I am deep into this fundamental question myself, trying to understand the basic idea of computation, coming at it from the foundational crisis in mathematics. Based on what I have read so far, I would have guessed maths to be the science of patterns and the manipulation of symbols be the definition of computation. I'd be curious to know how you see these two different aspects.
